Bas Abels aka The Funky Bastard co-produces with the 16 Bit Lolitas and Koalas For Breakfast is a massive summer release that is destined to be a classic. Bas brings a down-tempo vibe that is pure class with melodies that bring back vivid memories of the beach, happy thoughts and good times. Organic guitar cuts, classic Rhodes stabs combine with a groovy arrangement that provide the soundtrack to the summer of 2009.

Ben Brown’s Toasted Koalas Mix is a more energetic version with his signature sound. Ben keeps the groove and atmosphere of the original while providing an Ibiza-like balearic feel. Ben shortens up the bass line for more drive and added a bit more active percussion & fx to make it purr on the dance floor. This remix was created exclusively for the Audio Logic compilation HiDef 001 and now it is available with the original package.

Nick Stoynoff goes with a deep progressive interpretation providing an amazing mix. Nick strips it down going with a clean and driving sound perfect for the early evening or early morning sets.

DJ Reactions:

Benas Ivanovas (On | Off) – Unbelievable original mix. Also supporting Nick’s remix with a great deep vibe… Love it!

Blake Jarrell – My favorite release on Audio Logic so far… All 3 mixes have their own place in the night.

Chloe – Nick Stoynoff mix is spot on. I love how it hits and will definitely play it. Melodic and trippy too!

Chris Walsh – Original mix is a great summer track. Will definitely play it out.

Darin Epsilon – All mixes are very nice but the original version takes the cake. I love the sounds being used, especially the Rhodes piano. The main idea of the song is clear and makes for a memorable melody. The Ben Brown remix is definitely the most suited for dance floors and will get a lot of support. Nick’s remix is a nice halfway point between the other two with a very soothing and relaxing atmosphere.

Diego Mongelos – Great EP. I love the Nick Stoynoff remix… will support and chart.

Eelke Kleijn – Great pack! I like all 3 mixes and can play all of them at different times in a set.

Glenn Morrison – Original mix for me, thanks!

James Zabiela – The original mix will sit happily on my iPod whilst the others get a club work out. Thanks!

Joel Armstrong – Digging Ben’s mix, nice work.

Kristna Sky – Ben Brown Mix is my favorite of the three.

Luke Porter – Each of these could work well at the right time in a set.

Mike Hiraztka – Nice remix from Ben Brown. It should work well for daytime parties this summer.

Miss Sylvia – Best Audio Logic release yet! I love how different this track (and its remixes) is from everything else out there. It definitely stands out as one of my favorite releases from any label this year. The original and Ben’s remix both carry great energy and a light, warm feel. Nick’s darker take on the track’s very creative. I love all three. Thank you, Audio Logic!

Nosmo – Awesome!!!! All mixes are dope. I think the bass heavy beats in the Stoynoff mix take the cake but Ben Brown’s mix and the original will definitely see rotation too. Lovin’ this direction for Audio Logic.

Rob Passow (M.O.D.E.) – Nick Stoynoff’s mix is lovely.

Seba Rebolero – Like Nick Stoynoff’s Remix.

Seneca – Every mix is so good that I can’t choose a favorite! An amazing EP here.

Stefan (Progressive-World.at) – The original mix is something I want to hear all summer at the end of the night… Awesome record! Ben Brown’s dancier edge fits well, one for the dance floor. I will cheer the whole song if I hear it get played! Nice deep interpretation from Nick Stoynoff. I like it much more than his previous stuff! A nearly perfect EP from Audio Logic!

Stel – Like what Nick has done here. Definitely a producer to keep an eye on.

Thomas Sagstad – My favorite is the Nick Stoynoff remix. Mr. Brown’s mix is really good & reminds me of Sasha’s remix of Watching Cars Go By. Quality as usual!

Taken from Ben Brown’s Website:
This past fall, Seneca Giese at Audio Logic Recordings invited me to be involved with the first in a new mix compilation series. The title of the series stems from the series of parties we had done here in Chicago by the same name, and this first installment is an extension of those events in addition to being an expression of my personal taste in electronic dance music material.

This piece was done entirely in Ableton Live, with each track being highly edited and remixed to fit more cohesively in the entire mix. Features of each of these individual tracks appear throughout the mix… some are obvious, some are hidden a little deeper.

The process wasn’t like a normal DJ mix; it was a much more ‘produced’ and premeditated concept. I chose the tracks that went well together before considering the flow of the mix in its entirety. For example, the first transition completed was the last in the final mix; the great Ricardo Tobar remix of Fairmont’s “I Need Medicine” layered, looped, and edited over the entirety of Jamie McHugh’s beatless electronica track, “Stammer”. Each of these ‘track-to-track’ transitions were done independently. Eventually I had good amount of larger chunks consisting of 2 or 3 tracks that were then combined into the sections which then formed the entire mix.

About the Moonbeam and Funky Bastard remixes

Tyler Michaud and the New School Recordings crew approached me about a remix for the Moonbeam track in the early fall of ‘08 but I had to pass on it initially. I had the samples and realized after a few weeks that the melodies and atmosphere in the track were perfect for an opening track. We got it approved for the mix and I worked it into the intro track. Turned out to be a nice chill/melancholic opener for the CD.

I wanted to include the original mix of TFB’s Koalas For Breakfast but just couldn’t find a way to do it justice in the mix, as it’s such a good piece of organic guitarness on it own. I knew I wanted to remix the track when I heard it and worked it into a bit more of a summery tune with more dancefloor energy for later in the mix.

I had fun with the mix. This was my first endeavor into the official DJ Mix Compilation world, and I’m fairly happy with the results. I hope you are too.

P.S. The cover pic was taken outdoors in February.. was -10F with wind chill during that shoot, so that’s why I look cold. Thanks to Jason Warth for the great cover design, photos, and for making me look at least a little bit better than bad for the cover.
